The #1/#2 ranked Wyoming Seminary wrestling team got the season started in a big way hosting the SEM Duals. The Blue Knights hosted St. Anthony’s (NY), Scranton, and Malvern Prep. SEM got off to a quick start with a 70-0 win over St Anthony’s. Next up was Scranton and Scranton won several matches in a 68-11 defeat. In the featured dual of the afternoon that was streamed live on the internet, SEM cruised to a 39-12 victory over a very good Malvern Prep team that made the drive north from Philly.
SEM won both of the highly anticipated bouts of the night as #1 Nick Reenan outlasted #7 Michael Beard in a tight match 3-2. Reenan tweaked a knee in the 2nd period that appeared to slow him down but Beard was in deep on several late shots that Reenan had to defend to seal the victory.
In the upset of the day and perhaps the upset of the year so far in Pennsylvania wrestling, SEM 220# Will Hilliard controlled the action and stunned #11 Seth Janney 4-3. Janney scored the initial takedown late in the first period on an outside single but would struggle to do anything with Hilliard for the next four minutes. Most surprising was Hilliard’s ability to ride Janney for much of the second two periods. Hilliard was pleased with the win but was not happy with how he moved on his feet. Hilliard said he needs to work on finishing his shots and Janney will have plenty of opportunities for a rematch as they will see each other three more times this year.
11 SEM wrestlers were undefeated on the day as they warmed up for Ironman next weekend.
